BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The provision and maintenance of road infrastructure has constituted a significant factor in developing countries including Nigeria. Road transportation enhances significant economic development of the nation as a good proportion of economic and commercial activities are carried out by means of road transportation. But despite successive years of government intervention in the provision and maintenance of roads, there appears to be no meaningful achievement in this direction. Major roads have been parted with crevices. This is the characteristics of many roads in our city centers as well as in many federal highways. This ugly situation has led to many road accident and casualties. A crevice is a split or crack as found in a cliff which is characterized by a narrow opening. It is that deep surface found in rocks and which is the situation of many roads in the country. The provision and maintenance of good roads cannot be over emphasized; Atawa Akpodiete (2015). Good road network facilitates the movement of goods and persons thereby enhancing the development of commerce and economic activities. It also encourages tourism and fosters development of rural communities. The present predicament of many roads cannot be alienated from bad policy implementation which as a resulted to the bad conditions of roads. The study seeks to proffer an appraisal of the prevalence and management of crevices on Nigerian roads.

STATEMENT   OF   THE PROBLEM

The challenge confronting road users all over the country from city centers to our rural communities is the lack of adequate maintenance of roads. It is a characteristic of many road networks in the country. A significant number of roads have been parted by crevices. Road transportation enhances significant economic development of the nation as a good proportion of economic and commercial activities are carried out by means of road transportation. But despite successive years of government intervention in the provision and maintenance of roads, there appears to be no meaningful achievement in this direction. The sector has been affected by poorly implemented policies of government and neglect by agencies vested with the responsibility of road maintenance. Consequently, the problem facing the study is to appraise the prevalence and management of crevices on Nigerian roads.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the prevalence and management of crevices on Nigerian roads; The specific objectives include:

i.        To determine the prevalence of crevices on Nigerian roads.

ii.        To appraise the effect of crevices on Nigerian roads.

iii.        To determine the level of management of crevices on Nigerian roads.

  3. What is the level of management of crevices on Nigerian roads?

STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESES

The statement of the hypothesis for the study is stated in Null as follows:

HO    The prevalence of crevices on Nigerian roads is low.

HO    The effect of crevices on Nigerian roads is low.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study seeks to project the deplorable condition of many roads due to the neglect and lack of maintenance, which has resulted in crevices on many roads in Nigeria. With the view of attracting the government and other stakeholders to proffer interventions.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study focuses on the appraisal of the prevalence and management of crevices on Nigerian roads.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

CREVIC   DEFINED 

A crevice is a split or crack as found in a cliff which is characterized by a narrow opening. It is that deep surface found in rocks and which is the situation of many roads in the country.
