Effects of Liberalisation Policy on Agricultural Production in Nigeria Under the Wto Regime (2012-2016)

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Trade liberalization is viewed as the eradication and reduction of the  restrictions or barriers to the free exchange of goods between nations. Such barriers as tariffs, duties and surcharges, and nontariff, such as licensing rules and quotas. According to Economists the essence is to eradicate restrictions so as to promote freetrade. Caroline. B and Will .K, 2019 .Trade liberalization enhances free trade. Which allows countries to trade goods without regulatory barriers or their associated costs. This reduced regulation decreases costs for countries that trade with other nations and may, ultimately, result in lower consumer costs because imports are subject to lower fees and competition increases. Increased competition from abroad as a result of trade liberalization creates an incentive for greater efficiency and cheaper production by domestic firms. This competition might also spur a country to shift resources to industries in which they may have a competitive advantage.  The Nigerian agricultural sector has remained a resilient sustainer of the economy and the Nigerian people in terms of food supply, employment, national income generation and industrialization. It has also struggled to perform the above functions over the years in spite of declining effectiveness of policy attention since the 1980s.The exploitation of the agricultural sector since the 1960s provided the main source of employment, income and foreign exchange earnings for Nigeria. The study seeks to appraise the effects of liberalization policy on agricultural production in Nigeria under the WTO regime (2012-2016)
