INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Western education came into being with the coming of the European missionaries. Western education constituted an effective instrument used for colonizing the country before its independence in 1960. Western education greatly affected the traditional educational systems which existed in Nigeria and thereby led to the decline of cultural values and norms existed in traditional educational system obtained through an informal setting from parents, kinsfold, and the community (Hatch, 2011). However, western education have resulted in limiting students acquisition of indigenous knowledge. Students report a decline in indigenous knowledge which coincides with increased participation in the western education system. Education is viewed as the process of inviting truth and possibility. It is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life (Dewey, 1938). Learning is both a process and an outcome. As a process it is part of living in the world, part of the way our bodies work. As an outcome it is a new understanding or appreciation of something. The study seeks to appraise the effect of western education in potiskum local government area of yobe state.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The development of western education in northern Nigeria has constituted a great challenge.   Boko Haram, an Islamist militant group, and its targeting of girls’ education opposes the Western-style education associated with formal schooling in Nigeria and seeks to relegate women exclusively to the household. The claimed that Western education has greatly affected the traditional educational systems which existed in Nigeria and thereby led to the decline of cultural values and norms which existed in traditional educational system obtained through an informal setting from parents, kinsfold, and the community.  This has reduced the number of girl child attendance and young women in formal education. Rachel Hatch (2011). The consequences are that while western education has brought new knowledge and career skills which empowers the women fold to assume jobs and public leadership with their male counterparts it has also reduced the traditional institution which existed thereby affecting the cultural values and norms of the traditional communities. Therefore, the problem confronting the study is to appraise the effect of western education in potiskum local government area of yobe state.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the effect of western education in potiskum local government area of yobe state. The specific objectives include:

  1.     i.        To determine the relevance of western education.
  2.    ii.        To determine the effect of western education in potiskum local government area of yobe state. 

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

i.        How relevant is western education?

ii.        What are the effects of western education in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe state?

STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS

Ho   The effect of western education in potiskum local government area of yobe state is negative.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study investigates the effect of western education in potiskum local government area of yobe state. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies        to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

WESTERN EDUCATION DEFINED

Western education constitute the  replacement to primitive and informal African style of learning which emphasizes formal method of classroom education for all and sundry and is based on communication in writing, reading and numeric.

EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISION DEFINED

Educational Supervision consist of all effort involving school officials directed at t providing leadership to educational workers or teachers to enhance an  improved educational system and institution. The process involves the deployment of human and material resources.

EDUCATION DEFINED

Education is viewed as the process of inviting truth and possibility. It is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life.
